Remember SkySQL? The startup that is fighting against Oracle? There’s news from them today saying the company has raised $2.5 million today from California Technology Ventures to enhance its battle chest to fight against the giant. Besides the funding news, Patrik Sallner is being introduced as the new CEO of SkySQL.
Daniel Saito, the co-founder and director of sales in APAC at SkySQL, told me:
SkySQL adds new faces and additional funding that will help expand our business onto the cloud. By adding to our existing service portfolio for MySQL/MariaDB ecosystem – to a solutions and product based company.
The startup raised $4 million earlier in April which brings its series A funding to a total of $6.5 million. As I last reported, the founders of MySQL – Michael Widenius and David Axmark – actually financially backed SkySQL to fight against its acquirer, Oracle. The current team is comprised mostly of core members of MySQL during its formative stages.
Last year, we were told that SkySQL has 160 customers in 21 countries. Daniel revealed the startup now has 260+ customers over 30 countries today. Interestingly, Daniel is the only representative based in Asia but its business spans across Japan, Korea, Singapore, Indonesia and around the world. To our delight, Daniel will also be speaking at our Startup Asia Jakarta conference held in on June 7 and 8. So stay tuned, folks.
