Kompas, the biggest and the most successful newspaper in Indonesia, celebrates the four-year anniversary of its online news portal with a new feature: the Kompas.com Facebook Timeline. Officially launched yesterday, it is the first local news portal to integrate the Facebook Timeline feature in this way. It helps Kompas.com readers to share interesting or useful article links to friends and family on Facebook without actually clicking the share button, making it a more seamless experience.

To activate the feature, you can simply click “Connect to Facebook” on the Kompas.com homepage and login to your Facebook account. After you are done, every article that you read on Kompas.com will be shared to Facebook. The company reassures folks that it will not spam your friends’ feeds because the content will be aggregated into one column. The Timeline app also shows your friends’ activities on the Kompas site.

Edi Taslim, vice director of Kompas.com, explained:

This newest feature of Facebook Timeline on Kompas.com will help our readers find more articles that have been read by friends or colleagues that most likely have the same interest. Kompas.com readers can also see their friends’ activities on Kompas.com and get the same information like them.

Kompas started its offline-to-online strategy back in 1997 with Kompas Cyber Media, which turned into a subsidiary in 1998. Kompas Cyber Media has successfully beaten its challengers in the online portal space. In 2008, Kompas Cyber Media was reborn as Kompas.com, a news portal that has brought the trusty newspaper brand online. In this fourth year anniversary, Kompas.com is holding several fun contests and challenges such as the OrangeDotterz mission, 1M Facebook photo contest, the afore-mentioned Facebook Timeline, and T-shirt design competition with a total prize of more than 100m IDR (US$11,000).

Disclosure: Kompas.com is our Official local media partner for Startup Asia Jakarta 2012 and Edi Taslim will be speaking at one of our Coffee Chats. Please see our Statement of Ethics on how we remain independent from partners and advertisers.
