Here’s an interesting article from Akky Akimoto over at The Japan Times [1] that outlines what happens when a tech community recently rallied around the new crowdfunding startup, Studygift, without giving it the proper scrutiny. Akky notes:
People simply saw that there were big names behind Studygift.net and gave it support, despite the fact that it was a poorly conceived and badly executed service.
Critics got vocal, things got messy… But I encourage you to read the whole story. For startups out there – or indeed, any company who operates online — this is an interesting look the dangers of not being open with your users and the public about possible conflicts of interest.
