the Xiaomi M1
Finally, some news about a phone that isn’t the iPhone 4S! For the past few days, rumors have been swirling about a cooperation between China Unicom (NYSE:CHU; HKG:0762) and Xiaomi, and the latest reports have it that Unicom has ordered two million of Xiaomi’s M1 phones.
That’s quite a coup — and a change — for Xiaomi, which had previously suggested that its phones would be available exclusively via the company’s official online store. We assume Unicom isn’t buying two million of the things for personal use, though, so expect to see them in stores after all — if the rumors are true.
We’ve reached out to Xiaomi for comment on this story, and will update it if we hear back.
As of now, the Xiaomi’s phones are only being shipped to customers who preordered them early this fall. But starting December 18 — i.e. this Sunday — the phones will be available for purchase to everyone via the company’s website. If Unicom actually has ordered two million Xiaomi phones, it’s not yet clear when those phones will appear on store shelves.
