Ah… the search drama in China continues. Sogou’s CEO Zhang Chao Yang finally speaks, or rather, weibo-ed. On his Sohu Weibo today, he said:
So the search battle made 360 famous, has everyone forgotten Sogou? [1]
And just two hours ago another of Zhang’s weibos adds:
Sogou has to take part in this search war.
Okay, okay, it’s official. Welcome to the search war, Sogou. To me, Sogou was already in the war, but just wasn’t involved in the late night offensives like Qihoo 360 and Baidu.
Like it or not, 360 has caused quite some tremor in the search market. If Hitwise’s data is true, then 360 has ten percent stake in the search market, much of which was snatched from Baidu and Sogou. We can’t be sure how much exactly, and I’m still taking that data with a grain of salt.
The search battle is an interesting one not just because of Qihoo 360’s CEO Zhou Hongyi’s gangster-like attitude in the industry. Surveys across the Chinese web seem to suggest that netizens are enjoying the search war, perhaps hoping an alternative search service that can rival Baidu maybe. Interestingly, a significant number of netizens believe that 360 might have a shot to change things in this search war.
