In China, online shopping is very common among young people these days. However, the e-commerce craze has also become a hit among the older generation (50 years old and above), especially during the one-week holiday that just ended today.
According to figures from Taobao, China’s biggest consumer-to-consumer online mall, there were 1.3 million elderly online shoppers recorded during the recent festive period. Most of the crowds came from Shanghai and Beijing, with 174,000 and 114,000 older shoppers respectively.
And what exactly are they shopping for? Over five thousand individuals bought tourist packages, which makes sense during a long public holiday. A staggering 78,000 users bought wedding accessories and related products for their children. But it’s no surprise that approximately 43,000 elderly users bought snacks and local foodstuffs. A small minority of them also bought movie tickets and things like body massage vouchers.
It’s really cool to see older folks getting into online shopping. In the city of Jianhe, it was reported that a retired granny requested her daughter teach her how to shop online, and it seems like this is becoming the latest way in which you can show some respect to your elders by helping them out.
