Launched in November 2011, Malaysia-based startup ChopChop is a loyalty card smartphone application that helps users to keep track of their rewards on-the-go, without the hassle of holding all those loyalty-cards stuffed inside your wallet.

According to founder Aaron Hee, the user-base of the mobile app has seen an 800 percent increase since the team started to dedicate full-time efforts to the startup in mid-April. The idea came about after a friend of theirs lost his wallet – including all his reward cards. And so they decided to find a solution for this sort of ‘crisis’ as they noticed many people tend to misplace such cards 1.

In addition to digitizing physical loyalty reward cards, ChopChop also serves as a social, digital marketing platform for merchants to generate brand awareness and exposure through social media sharing, as well as enabling them to digitize store vouchers and prepaid cards. Merchants can also make use of ChopChop to remind their customers of their unused redemption points. The team stresses customer service, which is one of its distinct features compared to other loyalty apps in the market. Aaron Hee explains:

We are very customer-oriented. We constantly engage our merchants and promptly address problems that they face to ensure they get the best out of our product. Our relationship with our merchants is beyond just business and we are close friends with some as well. The level and sincerity of customer service can be a great competitive advantage that is not easily duplicated. We are Zappos-inspired.

Currently, merchants on ChopChop are all based in Malaysia but plans are underway for expansion into Singapore and Indonesia in the near future. ChopChop claims to have more than 70 merchants partnering with them and are continuously signing up with more to their network. Aaron adds:

We are in the midst of digitizing half of our wallet- and non-cash items like loyalty cards, vouchers, and prepaid cards. Next up: digitizing your cash items, making it easy for our users to manage their entire wallet, all in just one smartphone application.

If you reside in Malaysia, you might want to give ChopChop a try by downloading the free app for iOS, Android, or Blackberry.

  1. Aaron also mentions that prior to the development of ChopChop, the team was in the midst of creating a social payment network which later ran up against regulatory hindrances. The idea was just placed temporarily on hold, while they focused on creating a smartphone app that enables users to store all their reward cards on their mobile device.
