Xiaomi M1 Bests Samsung, HTC Smartphones in Browser Benchmarks

China’s homegrown Xiaomi is a bit of an experiment. The limited release — the phone won’t be publicly available for everyone until next month — the lack of traditional marketing, and the low price point have built up some pretty significant buzz for the company. But don’t let that fool you into thinking their handset, the Xiaomi M1, can’t walk the walk. The guys at Anandtech put it through its paces, along with five other smartphones they got from Qualcomm, and the results are impressive.

In total, Anandtech used a series of benchmarking tests to evaluate browser performance in these six phones. Note that the Xiaomi M1 is pitted here against some phones that cost double its price.

  • Samsung Galaxy S II (T-mobile)
  • Motorola Atrix
  • Samsung Galaxy S II (AT&T)
  • HTC Sensation
  • LG Optimus 3D
  • Xiaomi Mi-One

When it comes to Android phones, some of the biggest names are there. And yet Xiaomi bested them all in seven of the eleven categories Anandtech tested.

You can click here to read their full report, which includes details on the methodology of their testing as well as the full results. It’s pretty interesting stuff and we suggest you check it out. But in case you’re pressed for time, here’s the “Overall score” that their benchmarking software awarded each device, based on the results of each individual test:

Brian Klug of Anandtech writes:

The total score subjectively lines up with where I would mentally rank the devices – we’ve seen how competent Samsung’s browser optimizations are (especially their browser’s backing store), and how much sometimes HTC’s Sense tends to weigh the platform down. Motorola’s browser on the Atrix and LG’s on the Optimus 3D take a more stock approach, and the Xiaomi surprises us with some serious optimizations from a company I doubt many in the US have heard of.

So yeah, given this, we’re feeling pretty excited for December. Of course, it remains to be seen what the public reaction will be once there are a lot of these phones in the wild. How will they hold up in the real world, under long-term use? No one yet knows, but we’re sick of waiting and ready to find out.

In the meantime, tech geeks can pore over all the gory details and all of the tests at Anandtech.
