Keeping it Simple: Perx Combines Loyalty Program With LBS

perx-lbsSquiryl, a loyalty program mobile app, got some attention after we wrote about it. But one of our readers pointed out that Perx is perhaps the more popular loyalty program app in Singapore right now (although he/she likes Squiryl too). So I thought it would be only fair to give it a look as well. And I can see why Perx is popular. It’s extremely simple to use (with just three tabs) and gives users relevant content based on their locations. Its simplicity is its strength.

The biggest flaw is that I can’t search for what I want. Content is only fed to me based on my location, and I think a search bar would still keep the design simple and also make its list of merchants more accessible.

The stamp system unfortunately follows the traditional loyalty program approach where consumers can only claim rewards after collecting say 10 stamps. So there isn’t any difference between two stamps and seven stamps since both can’t be used to claim the reward.

Squiryl, in my opinion, nailed the rewards scheme better as rewards are highly customized with different benefits offered for different numbers of stamps.

Perx has managed to bring in some big brands on board which certainly adds to its credibility. I’m seeing Polar Puffs and Cakes, Dunkin Donuts, and Coffee Bean on my list of nearby merchants. I do like Dunkin Donuts (stomach growling…) and — for better or worse — that is likely to motivate me to log on to Perx more often.

Perx has lots of merchants on board, with over 100 locations despite starting just a month ago, as I learned from Andrew Roth the co-founder of Perx. I also understand that Eduardo Saverin, the co-founder of Facebook, is an investor at Perx. That’s all I know as Andrew remained tight-lipped over the investment details.

Other similar apps would be in deep shit if Perx continues to acquire more big brands at this rate. And like it or not, Eduardo’s name does help to bring in more merchants quickly.
