In Beijing, Toilets Just a Text Away Starting May 1

Last November we reported on a government plan to create a text message system that would allow visitors to find the nearest public toilet via their phones. It wasn’t really clear how all this was going to work, or when exactly it was going to be put into action. Now we know one of the answers. If you’re in Beijing, you’ll be able to start toilet texting on May 1.

We’re still not really clear on how it’s going to work — this Beijing Evening News article is light on the details — but supposedly it will allow users to text a special phone number which will text them back with the location of the nearest public toilet. Sounds cool, but how well will it work? We’ll have to wait until May to find out.

Until then, you’ll just have to keep using the bathrooms at the nearest KFC like everyone else does.
