With the advent of email, we’re gradually forgetting how it feels to receive an actual postcard in the mail. There are e-postcards, but they lack the personal touch. To rekindle that joy of holding an actual postcard from a far-flung place in your hand, Singapore Post (SingPost) has launched its latest service. Using its Post-a-Card app, you can send personalized high quality print photos to your loved ones, from anywhere to everywhere in the world.

The Post-a-Card service can be used in few simple steps:

  1. Upon launching the application, you can choose the type of postcard you would like to send. For instance, when you choose the category “Happy Birthday” you will be brought to templates that allow you to add photos. You can also choose to send only the photo, if you wish.
  2. After you are done with the selection, you can add a photo to the template, either from your photo gallery, Facebook album, or a new shot taken on your webcam.
  3. You can then add in customized messages fully personalized with the preferred font and color of your choice, along with the delivery address.
  4. When you’re all satisfied and ready to send the postcard out, you can pay using your credit card, PayPal, or prepaid credits.

SingPost will then print a four inch by six inch high quality glossy postcard and deliver it to your intended recipient, either in Singapore or anywhere in the world. It now makes sending a postcard really convenient, without having to go through the hassle of getting it, a stamp, and going to the post office. All these can be done easily while on-the-go.

I like the idea very much, and I recall the joy of waiting for postcards and cards in the mail from relatives and friends when I was young. It makes it really convenient too, for frequent travelers who want to share the truly precious shots with loved ones via a postcard.

Honestly, as much as Post-a-Card closes the gap and makes sending cards more personal, the part about the messages not being handwritten still makes it pretty cold. I still think smudged ink, spelling corrections, and barely-legible handwriting contribute to the personal touch.

SingPost is giving the a user’s first Post-a-Card for free (for a limited time), and the app is free for download. It’s available on both iTunes and Google Play, and it costs S$1.90 (US$1.50) per card if it’s sent within Singapore, and S$2.50 (US$2) if it’s sent to the rest of the world. You can also see how it works in the video below:
